Orientation and Mobility

Travel for students who are blind or visually impaired requires specialized instruction to ensure their safety and independence.  WSBVI employs specialists in the area of orientation and mobility that can instruct your students.  While taking classes in Orientation and Mobility, your child can learn:

  • How to properly use a cane to assist in locating obstacles or finding their way around familiar and unfamiliar surroundings
  • Crossing streets safely and effectively, understanding traffic patterns, and navigating both residential neighborhoods and business districts.
  • Planning and executing routes from a “home base” to a given destination using maps, directions obtained from various sources, assistive technology, and other methods with support and assistance as needed.
  • Use of public transportation systems to reach destinations in both Janesville and other larger cities.
