2019 Summer EmployAbility Program

June 16, 2019 - August 2, 2019

This program’s focus is teaching skills for independence, including orientation and mobility, daily living skills, employment skills, and psychosocial issues of disability.  The ultimate goal is to increase each student’s level of independence.

This program accommodates up to 12 students 16 to 21 years of age.  Students who are blind or visually impaired and who attended high school in Wisconsin for the 2018-2019 school year are eligible to attend.

Students will participate in 20 hours per week of paid employment at minimum wage during the final four weeks of the program.

Who Will Benefit?

Students who plan to live independently, and work with no or minimal support, and/or attend a university, private, or technical college.

Housing & Meals

Participants will stay on the WCBVI campus for the entire six weeks of the program. Dormitory style housing will be provided.

Students will experience planning, shopping, and preparing meals as well as dining in the school cafeteria and dining out.  Planned meals are paid for by WCBVI.  Students ordering out or dining out on their own must use their own money.

Students commit to the full six weeks of the program; however, the Center is closed to students from June 30th through July 7th and students will not be allowed to remain on campus during that time. Students will return on Sunday, July 7th from 4:00 p.m.- 6:00 p.m. to continue with the Employment portion of the program.

Participants are responsible for their own transportation to and from the Wisconsin Center for the Blind and Visually Impaired campus located in Janesville, Wisconsin.

Although the program is free, students should bring approximately $20 per week with them to spend on incidentals and for use in money management skills.

Please fill out the online interest form.  After receiving the Interest Form, those who are selected will receive a registration packet. Others who are not initially selected will be included on a wait list.
