Specialized materials are available for loan from the media center at WCBVI to any Wisconsin resident. The materials available are in Braille, twin vision (picture books that have both Braille and print), large print, described video recordings (in which the action and characters are described), and kits (which contain a print book, Braille book, a 2-track cassette and at least one stuffed animal).
Some non-specialized materials are available. These include audiobooks, video recordings, regular print books, and print books with an audiobook. A professional resource section that may assist teachers and parents of blind and visually impaired children is also available.
Who May Request Materials?
Anyone in Wisconsin may request materials through the media center. You don’t have to be a student of the Wisconsin School for the Blind and Visually Impaired. However, to receive accessible items, patrons need to be a registered user of the Library of Congress Talking Book Program via the Wisconsin Talking Book and Braille Library. For more information about the Wisconsin Talking Book and Braille Library, please telephone 1-800-242-8822.
Materials Check-Out and Shipping
Materials will be checked out for 8 weeks with few exceptions. There will always be a note as to when an item is due back. Renewals are possible, but not for the entire school year.
Braille and large print materials are sent Free Matter for the Blind. That phrase is written in place of a stamp and sent through the United States Postal Service. All other materials are mailed or sent via a carrier. Materials should be returned in the manner in which they are sent.
